Class 12 Physics Current Electricity – Complete Chapter Guide with PYQs
Electrostatics ke baad Class 12 Physics ka jo chapter students ki asli samajh test karta hai, woh hai Current Electricity. Dekhne mein simple lagta hai — V = IR toh Class 10 se aata hai — but jaise hi Kirchhoff ke loops, Wheatstone bridge aur potentiometer aate hain, aadha class confuse ho jaata hai. Sant Nagar, Burari ke bahut se students yahi galti karte hain: formula ratt lete hain, circuit samajhte nahi.
Iss guide mein hum poora chapter ek teacher ki tarah, step by step khol rahe hain — drift velocity se lekar potentiometer tak. Har concept ke saath yeh bhi bataya hai ki board mein woh kis form mein aata hai, taaki aapki mehnat sahi jagah lage.
Current Electricity Class 12 Physics ka Chapter 3 hai. Electrostatics ke saath milke yeh board mein ~16 marks ka block banata hai (akela ~6-7 marks). Sabse important: Ohm's law, drift velocity (I = nAevd), Kirchhoff's laws, Wheatstone bridge, terminal voltage (V = E − Ir) aur potentiometer. NCERT + PYQ practice zaroori. Free demo: 096671 22571.

Electric Current Aur Drift Velocity
Electric current matlab charge ke flow ki rate — I = Q/t, SI unit Ampere. Conductor ke andar free electrons random ghoomte rehte hain, but jab potential difference lagta hai toh unpe ek average velocity aa jaati hai jise drift velocity (vd) kehte hain. Important relation:
- I = nAevd (n = electron density, A = area, e = charge)
- Current density J = I/A = nevd
- Mobility μ = vd/E
Board mein 'drift velocity define karo aur I = nAevd derive karo' ek repeat hone wala 2-3 mark question hai. Ise ratna nahi, derive karna aana chahiye.
Ohm's Law, Resistance Aur Resistivity
V = IR — bas itna yaad rakhna kaafi nahi. Board deep samajh maangta hai:
- Resistance R = ρL/A (ρ = resistivity, material ka property hai)
- Resistivity ρ = m/(ne²τ) (τ = relaxation time)
- Conductivity σ = 1/ρ
Temperature badhne pe metals ki resistance badhti hai (RT = R0(1 + αΔT)), jabki semiconductors ki ghatti hai — yeh difference board aur JEE dono mein poochha jaata hai. Ohmic vs non-ohmic conductors ka graph bhi yaad rakho.
Series, Parallel Aur Kirchhoff's Laws
Simple combinations toh aate hi hain — Series: R = R₁ + R₂ + …; Parallel: 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + … — lekin complex circuits ke liye Kirchhoff zaroori hai:
- KCL (Junction rule): kisi junction pe aane wali current = jaane wali current (charge conservation).
- KVL (Loop rule): kisi bhi closed loop mein sab potential differences ka sum zero (energy conservation).
Numerical solve karne ka tareeka: pehle currents ko arrow se maano, junction pe KCL lagao, phir 2 loops mein KVL — do equations, do unknowns. Grow Up Classes mein hum har student se 15-20 aise circuits solve karvate hain, kyunki practice ke bina yeh chapter sirf padhne se nahi aata.
Cell, EMF Aur Internal Resistance
Cell ki EMF (E) woh maximum voltage hai jo koi current na behne pe milta hai. Jaise hi current behta hai, cell ke andar ki internal resistance (r) kuchh voltage kha jaati hai:
- Terminal voltage V = E − Ir
- Cells in series: E = E₁ + E₂, r = r₁ + r₂
- Cells in parallel (same EMF): E same, 1/r = 1/r₁ + 1/r₂
'Charging ke time V = E + Ir hota hai' — yeh chhota sa point board mein aksar 1 mark le jaata hai, isliye yaad rakhna.
Wheatstone Bridge Aur Potentiometer
Yeh do topics chapter ke 'scoring stars' hain — inse derivation almost pakki hai.
Wheatstone Bridge
Balanced condition: P/Q = R/S. Balance pe galvanometer se koi current nahi behti. Meter bridge isi principle pe unknown resistance nikalta hai.
Potentiometer
Potentiometer ek lambi uniform wire hoti hai jispe potential gradient (k = V/L) constant hota hai. Iska sabse bada faayda — balance point pe woh cell se koi current nahi kheenchta, isliye asli EMF measure karta hai (voltmeter sirf terminal voltage deta hai). Applications: do cells ki EMF ki tulna, aur cell ki internal resistance nikalna. 'Potentiometer voltmeter se behtar kyun hai' — yeh board ka classic question hai.
Electrical Power Aur Energy
P = VI = I²R = V²/R. Energy = P × t. Numericals mein aksar heating, bulb rating, aur cost-of-electricity type questions aate hain — units (kWh) ka dhyaan rakhna.
Common Mistakes Jo Marks Kha Jaati Hain
- EMF aur terminal voltage ko same maan lena — current behne pe V hamesha E se kam (discharge mein).
- Kirchhoff mein sign convention galat — loop ki direction pehle fix karo, phir consistent raho.
- Drift velocity ko high maan lena — actually woh bahut kam (mm/s) hoti hai; current fast isliye lagta hai kyunki field poori wire mein turant set ho jaati hai.
- Potentiometer/Wheatstone ki derivation ratna — steps samjho, warna twist wale question mein atak jaoge.
PYQ Pattern — Last 5 Years
- 1 derivation — Kirchhoff / potentiometer / Wheatstone / drift velocity (3-5 marks)
- 1 numerical — circuit with EMF & internal resistance (3 marks)
- 1 conceptual — terminal voltage / resistivity vs temperature (2 marks)
- Assertion-reason / MCQ (1-2 marks)
Frequently Asked Questions
Current Electricity se board mein kitne marks aate hain?
Electrostatics aur Current Electricity milke board mein lagbhag 16 marks ka block bante hain. Current Electricity se akela aam taur par 6-7 marks aate hain — ek derivation, ek numerical aur 1-2 short/MCQ.
Current Electricity ka sabse important topic kaunsa hai?
Kirchhoff's laws, Wheatstone bridge aur potentiometer — inhi se derivations aur numericals sabse zyada poochhe jaate hain. Drift velocity (I = nAevd) aur terminal voltage (V = E − Ir) bhi pakke questions hain.
Potentiometer voltmeter se behtar kyun hai?
Balance point pe potentiometer koi current nahi kheenchta, isliye woh cell ki asli EMF measure karta hai. Voltmeter thodi current leta hai, isliye sirf terminal voltage dikhata hai — isi wajah se potentiometer ko 'ideal voltmeter' kehte hain.
